Humpback Mating Season
Humpback Whale season is in full swing and the number of breechings, pectoral fin slapping and tail fluke displays have increased as male whales pursue the their ladies of the season. Even our dinner cruise passengers are seeing some amazing displays.

Numerous new calves have been seen in the area accompanied by their proud mothers. Some have even swam up to the boat to see what the humans are up to.

The weather on the Big Island has been great so far with the large winter swells missing most of Kona's protected areas. One of the great things about Kona is the normally calm waters.

Typically January and February are the months for rough seas. So far we have only seen 2 bumpy days and no changes are seen in the near future. This means the remainder of the humpback whale watching season should be smooth sailing.

There are many sources to research your activity. You can find a lot of information on the web as well as the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) website.

Local Value

On a budget related issue, I get asked more and more how to find the best values on everything from hotels to restaurants and tours. This is a great time to find bargains but be sure to check before you jump. Most operations are giving discounts to attract business. But the old adage of too good to be true still applies. Hotels are rated in many travel guides and there is something to fit everyone budget. Restaurants reviews are best when they come from the people most familiar with them. THE LOCALS. If you can solicit information from the local residents, you will most likely have the best results.  Independent travel guides and local residents will give the real scoop when it comes to quality.

See ya in Kona
